NASCAR Dover International Speedway – Ones to Watch
This weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup race takes place at Dover International Speedway. The main favourite has to be Jimmie Johnson as he has won at the track a record eight times and he also won the race last weekend. Since 2009 he has won the race five time out of the ten times he has led more than 100 laps twelve times and so he could have won even more. However, there are other drivers snapping at his heels.
Jeff Gordon could very well be one of those people. He is the points leader so far and has won at Dover four times although the last time was back in 2001. He does seem to be improving over the last few years. His back was a problem last week but despite missing practice to rest it, he still managed to finish the race, which would imply that he will be okay this weekend, he has said that it does seem to be improving.
Tony Steward won in Dover last season and so he could also be up the top there. He has had trouble recovering from a broken leg, but his form is coming back and he admits that Dover is a tough course for him but a victory there last year made it even better and he could be up for trying hard again this time.
Carl Edwards has had four victories at Dover under his belt and he loves racing there. He admits that it is a demanding track but that he enjoys it and so he could certainly be in the mix.
Of course Johnson made a mistake last season when he was penalized and did not finish until 17th place. However, it is unlikely that he will make a mistake again and he will be coming out on a high form his victory last weekend. He is in an optimistic mood and so it will be interesting to see what he is capable of.
