Interesting Start Due for First Chase Race at Chicagoland
The rain fell heavily during qualifying and in the end it meant that there was a bit of a shake up in places. Some drivers chose to do a late lap so that they would get better track conditions but obviously it was a risk because the weather could have got worse rather than batter. In the end it meant that the fastest drivers were not necessarily at the front of the group.
Interestingly, all of the drivers took part in this qualifying, not just those that are going through to the Chase. They will also all go through to the main race, despite the fact that winning will not have any effect on the final result for many of them. However, a win could still be good for their reputation and team. In pole position will be Kyle Busch and then Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards. In fifth is Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson in 7th, Jeff Gordon in 8th, Kevin Harvick in 12th, Dale Earnhardt Jr in 13th, Kurt Busch in 14th, AJ Allemendinger in 17th, Kasey Kahne in 19th, Greg Biffle in 20th, Aric Almirola in 23rd, Denny Hamlin in 24th, Brad Keselowski in 25th and Joey Logano in 28th. However, indispursed between them are some of the other drivers that have not qualified for the Chase. This means that Ricky Stenhouse, Clint Bowyer, Paul Menard, Kyle Larson, Jamie McMurray, Brian Vickers, Austin Dillon and Danica Patrick are also in the top twenty.
These drivers who have not qualified for the Chase still have a point to prove. They will want to race well for their teams and show that they have something to offer towards the end of the season. They may feel that they still want to have a try at a win and that they have not yet run out of steam although the season is coming towards its close. Several drivers will still be wanting a win as they know that they are capable but were not able to show what they were capable of before this stage.
