Joey Logano Takes Sprint Cup Pole
Joey Logano repeated the feat that he achieved at Martinsville last year by making it to pole position. The session was delayed by heavy rain but he managed to stay in the top ten in all of the three qualifying segments and his best lap of 19.232 seconds was enough to beat Ryan Newman to the top spot. Closely behind Newman was Martin Truex Jr who has not finished outside the top ten so far this season. Jeff Gordon is next, then Jimmie Johnson and Tony Steward is in sixth so will hope to make the most of this position as he has not yet had a good season. Kevin Harvick, who has been on a massive winning streak was just 17th and Kurt Busch who fought hard to try to overtake him last week is only in 26th place. However, Harvick has come from the back to win before, as have many other drivers and so this race certainly will not be a forgone conclusion. Most are waiting to see whether Harvick can get yet another win or at least top two place to keep his streak going. However, others will like to see a few other drivers in the mix to keep things more interesting.
Chase Elliott had a panic in the weather conditions. He needed to qualify on pace in order to make sure that he got a place in the main race as he is a debutant. He will be hoping to take part in the next five Sprint Cup races representing Hendrick Motorsports having been very successful at the Nationwide contest. He managed 27th on the grid in the end which should give him a decent position to experience the race for the first time.
